I’ve been a reader of fantasy romance since I first started reading fairy tales as a child. I love being immersed in fantasy worlds, but I’m also a sucker for a good love story. As fantasy romance and romance subgenres have grown in popularity, it has given me a lot to think about what makes them so special.
fellow book rioter Lindsey Manusos Highlighting the difference between the two, it has been said that while ‘happily-ever-afters’ (HEAs) are essential for romanticism, they are not for fantasy romance. Romances are more romance-focused, and fantasy romances are more fantasy-forward. Fantasy romances don’t have to have a HEA, but they often do.
As far as creating a fantasy is concerned epic fantasy, you can check out this primer Many subgenres in fantasy. Epic fantasies take place in another world and often have another epic event occurring to move the story forward and resolve conflicts.
So, with that in mind, I’ve gathered a collection of epic fantasy romance novels below. These swoon-worthy stories take place in different worlds, feature deep fantasy world-building and epic storylines, while also promising a strong romance. I hope you fall in love with each one!

Immortal By Sue Lin Tan
This epic fantasy romance from Su Lin Tan is steeped in Chinese mythology. It also has the most beautiful cover and pink spray edges. When Tianxia’s heir Lian is poisoned, her grandfather steals a lotus from the immortals to cure her. In retaliation, the immortal queen sends the God of War to attack their kingdom. When Lian ascends the throne, his presence is requested in the Immortal Realm. There, she will attempt to form an alliance with the God of War himself.

jasmine throne By Tasha Suri
Tasha Suri combines political intrigue with elements of Indian history in this epic fantasy romance series set in an India-inspired fantasy world. After being forcibly held captive in an ancient temple by her tyrant brother, Princess Malini begins planning an escape. Things change and sparks start flying when Malini meets Priya, the maid.

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey
This classic fantasy romance from Jacqueline Carey takes place in the land of Terre d’Ange, where angels and humans created a race that lives by the rules love the way you want. The story’s heroine, Phèdre no Delaunay, has a red spot in one eye. When a nobleman buys her indentured servitude, she realizes she has the rare gift of being pricked by Kushiel’s dart. As she trains as both a spy and a prostitute, Phedre uncovers a conspiracy that could jeopardize everything she holds dear.

Paladin’s Grace By T. Kingfisher
T. Kingfisher is an expert in creating compelling fantasy worlds and weaving romance into them. I also love how relatable the characters of Kingfisher are. They are often awkward, average looking and trying their best instead of being handsome and the perfect hero. This is one of my favorite things about his writing. After Stefan’s lord dies, he lives as a paladin trying to find purpose again. When he rescues a runaway named Grace in an alley, the pair soon become embroiled in a mysterious murder plot with a killer behind it!
song of blood and stone by L Penelope
l. Penelope’s epic fantasy romance focuses on the feud between two kingdoms and the wall between them. A temporary peace prevails until a magical curtain called the Mantle separates the two kingdoms of Alcira and Lagrimmar. Due to her skin color and the gift of Earthsong, Jasminda has lived most of her life as an outcast, but when the Mantle begins to crack, she will team up with an Alcyrran spy to find the legendary Queen Who Sleeps and save the Mantle.

This state won’t kill me by Ilona Andrews
Written by bestselling author duo Ilona Andrews, the premise of this new epic fantasy romance is so much fun. When Maggie awakens in the city of Cair Toren, she is in for a shock. She has somehow been transported to the world of a famous but incomplete fantasy book series that she loves. Despite the dangers, Maggie knows how to survive, thanks to all her reading. As she grows closer to eccentric characters, including an intriguing soldier, she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her new friends alive and save the kingdom from war!
