Have you ever felt like the world is so overwhelming that you need your reading life to keep things quiet for once? I can definitely relate. It feels like the world is in a constant state of chaos (don’t know why; let’s not get into that), and since reading has always been my favorite medium and greatest escape, it’s hard these days to find the energy and motivation to read the way I really want to. Just as I have comfort shows I return to again and again when life gets tough, I have books and genres I will turn to when my reading life gets tough. Reading intuitively can be a big help. Casual fantasy romances especially often have the right mix of quiet spontaneity and joy that keeps me engaged without trying too hard.
Maybe you too need some of that cozy fantasy romance goodness right now. Maybe you, like me, are staring blankly at one of the worst books of your life. Or maybe you love a good cozy romance and are hoping to find your next favorite read. Either way, these nine new cozy fantasy romance novels are exactly the balm you need.
Sit back, relax—no, really, take those shoulders back and unclench your jaw—and read some books that will make your nervous system work no harder than it already does.

Agnes Aubert’s Mysterious Cat Shelter By Heather Fawcett
Author of one of my favorite cozy fantasy romance series, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Fairieshas inadvertently written another extremely cozy novel about a magical cat shelter. Agnes is in desperate need of a new storefront after losing her previous location in the disastrous outcome of a street fight between two magicians. She wants a place where she can care for her cats, attract potential adopters, and stay away from magicians. Unfortunately, she doesn’t realize until it’s too late that her reclusive landlord is also the infamous wizard Havelock Renard. She isn’t too thrilled to learn that her new tenant runs a cat shelter.

Violet Thistlevet is no longer a villain By Emily Krempholtz
Following the death of Guy Shadowfed, Violet, formerly known as Thornwitch, has a chance to rebuild herself out of the shadow of the dark lord who raised her. Her plant magic has always been associated with evil, but maybe if she tries to use her magic for good one time, she’ll be able to make up for some of the terrible things she’s done. Rough Around the Hedges, Violet’s new plant shop, looks like the perfect place to start. I wish his new landlord, who runs a dispensary next door, would give him some leeway. But when a blight begins to kill all the plants in town, Violet and Nathaniel must set aside their differences to get to the bottom of the problem plaguing Dragon’s Breath – even if Nathaniel doesn’t know exactly who he’s dealing with.

tusk love By Thea Guanzon
Inspired by the world of Exandria from Critical Role, tusk love Weaves a spicy tale of romance on the road. Guinevere’s life has been dedicated to him. As the daughter of an ambitious businessman, she is expected to be the dutiful wife of an overbearing lord. But Guinevere would rather live a life of freedom and adventure than conform to rote expectation. When bandits attack his caravan, only the intervention of a half-orc named Oscar saves him. It’s actually a little more adventurous than he expected, and Oscar certainly wasn’t looking for a spoiled brat to join him on his journey. But when sparks start flying between them, they must decide whether to follow the paths that have been laid out for them or make a different choice.

Seldian is a thief who has taken a magical oath to never fall in love. Kel is a charming bard and also Seldian’s ex-girlfriend. But it turns out that their chemistry hasn’t cooled over the years, and the job isn’t as simple as they thought. There are some very powerful players interested in the Fey Gem, and it may take more than the couple’s healing to get out of this mission with their objective and their lives intact.

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping By Sangu Mandana
Sangu Mandanna is the queen of cozy fantasy romance novels. His first book of this genre for adult readers, super secret society of irregular witchesis a wonderfully cozy read, and her latest novel retains the charm of a magical inn run by a witch and the aunt she resurrected from the dead. The magic Sera used to bring her aunt back cost her dearly. Now, she has been exiled from the magical world and has lost almost all of her once-powerful magic. But an ancient book of spells could be the solution to both of her problems, if only she could find it. Luke, the inn’s grumpy new guest, is pretty sure this is a terrible idea. Mo Elmthorne is Juniper’s other half – platonically, speaking. Wherever Juniper lacks – tending the farm, bartering, manual labor in general – Moe has him covered.
