I love a book that poses a complex question that feels like a fun dinner conversation game. Can you solve your own murder mystery? How will it work—will you be alive, resurrected, are there any options in between? Below I’ve found three books with different voices and ways of taking on this challenging question.

It’s a fantasy crime novel, a genre mix that I wish there was more of because it allows for a lot of interesting questions and dives into things like morality. Imagine our perfect world that includes a small service that can bring people back to life. Thus Lou, who was murdered by a serial killer, is now alive, although the program controls what and how memories come to life. The good news is that she’s back home with her husband and child, and she’s in a serial killer survival group for any help she can get. The problem is: things don’t seem to be adding up in her new life…
dead girl gang by Lily Anderson
This is a very fun YA novel that takes a bit of a side-by-side perspective as the main character, Mila, teams up with girls who are solving their own murders. The reason for the dead girls being “alive” is also found to be because he accidentally revived them while performing magic. An even bigger issue? She is an inexperienced Wiccan and had to bring back her best friend not only to prove that she did not die by suicide, but she also accidentally brought back two “enemy” girls. The good news is that now they can all find out who murdered them. The bad news is that they have to work together and there are only seven days left.
not quite dead yet by holly jackson
