Read Anjali Sachdeva’s new short story “Chimera”!
Oh my god, have I ever been so excited when I found out there was a new short story from Anjali Sachdeva. their 2018 collection, All the names they used for God, One of my favorite books! This is very good. (Seriously, read it right now. I’ll wait right here.) (No problem, I am I’m going to read it again.)
In her new story, “Chimera,” a mom watches a reality show where contestants create genetically modified plants and animals to win challenges, while also dealing with day-to-day stuff, like talking to her kids on the phone and thinking about Thanksgiving. You can read an excerpt below and full story But supernatural magazine! (after this, read an interview with Anjali Sachdeva)
Savita never liked Thanksgiving. The pretentiousness of it all, the abundance of foods rich in fat and sugar, eating until you’re ready to burst, never appealed to her. When children were little they used to beg for traditional American food-Just once, mom-But he refused. Instead, he fed them dishes of dal, vegetables and butter chicken as if it was any other day. She knew they collected leftovers from their school friends, ate mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce reheated in other moms’ kitchens: that’s how it would be. As they grew older, she learned to make peace with the day when they would all be together, even if she didn’t like the celebration. A day when even the stingiest employer would grant leave, when schools and colleges were closed, and she could tell everyone to go back home for the weekend. It was good while it lasted.
Now, with the holidays three weeks away, she finds herself sinking into the sadness that grips her every year. This does not actually mean that she will spend minimal time with John, leaving him to do crosswords alone at the breakfast table or go to the coffee shop around the corner and enjoy their cup of bitter dark roast for an hour or more. She turned sixty-five in March and decided it was time to try more new things if she didn’t want to age prematurely. For the most part she’s done well at it, learning knitting and Thai cooking and a little Spanish. But since November started, there’s nothing she wants to do except curl up under a blanket and watch television on her laptop in the guest room until she feels tired enough to sleep.
tonight she’s watching ImaginationA reality show where contestants create genetically modified plants and animals to complete various challenges. It’s a standard elimination-style competition, painfully formulaic, but she’s already watched enough shows dedicated to contestants finding love or making clothes or baking increasingly elaborate cupcakes; Why not this? Halfway through the opening credits Meera calls, and Savita turns off the sound and talks to her, half-heartedly watching as the host and a trio of judges appear on the screen, followed by the contestants. Most of them wear the marks of their profession on their bodies. They have custom colored eyes or stripes of lizard skin on their limbs, colonies of ornamental fungi or vines of flowers growing through their hair. Only one appears completely unmarked, a tall, brown-skinned man named Jay, with jagged cheekbones and wide eyes. He probably looks South Indian or Sri Lankan, but there is something uncharacteristic about his features. However, beautiful without any glitter and fuss.
“What are you doing this week?” Meera says.
“Oh, I don’t know. Like always.”
