10 Years of Dog Man

Dave Pilkey first appeared on my radar in the early 2000s when my brother started reading captain underpants. I loved seeing her shed light on books the way I do. Now that I work in a library, I see that same enthusiasm in many of the children who read the Pilkey books in our collection, especially dog man series.
This is what makes Dave Pilkey’s books so special. They’re funny, heart-warming, and most importantly, they help children develop a love of reading. Ever since I wrote a literature review on the joy of reading in college, I have been a firm believer in how much fostering joy in reading can do to help people become lifelong readers.


This year marks 10 years since the publication of the first book dog man Book. I admire how much joy Dave Pilkey brings to young readers, especially reluctant readers. To celebrate this special anniversary, I’m shining a well-deserved spotlight on Dave Pilkey and his legacy dog man Below

This note hit close to home for me, and as a mother my heart goes out to Pilkey. His perseverance to create despite obstacles from his teachers is incredibly inspiring. It’s great to know that her books are now reaching so many children, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and anyone who can relate to how they felt in school.
